14266C Gibson F-4 mandolin (used, 1917) with dark red sunburst finish. We think of this as a comfortable player's instrument, rather than a collectible. It has lots of playing wear, and has received many repairs over the years, but it's in top notch playing condition now, and the sound is powerful and silky smooth. Comes with original hardshell case and a bakers' dozen of mysterious old mandolin picks. $4,000.00

14366C Very fancy flatback mandolin (used, early 20th century) attributed to Weymann, but looks more like Vega to me. Back and sides are Brazilian rosewood, and top is Adirondack spruce, elaborately purfled. Tortoise pickguard is inlaid into the top, with beautiful abalone pearl vines inlaid into the tortoise shell. Tailpiece cover is masterfully engraved with the face of an angel. It's set up with intonated bone bridge. The action is excellent, and the instrument is crack free. The finish, however, is original, and close to 100 years old. The price includes a period hardshell case that's in good condition. $950.00 |

Bouzoukis and Octave Mandolins:
There's a lot of confusion around naming the larger instruments
in the mandolin family. One person's bouzouki, or Irish bouzouki,
is another person's octave mandolin. Additionally, there are
variations in convention from maker to maker and from the US
to Europe. For an overview, you might want to check out this
article
on the mandolin family in Wikipedia. |
