Gretsch serial numbers

Pencil, label, date-code and hyphenated systems all existed. The date-code system overlaps with the 1960s sequential numbers. A serial is evidence, not proof.

This is an example number. Replace it with yours. Hyphens matter, so keep them.

Where to look

  • Pencilled inside the body (1939 to early 1950s)
  • Paper label inside the body
  • Stamped on the headstock back (1960s onwards)
Generic acoustic guitar outline with three marked places where a serial number may be found 1 inside, through the soundhole 2 neck block 3 back of headstock
Generic outline, not any maker's model. Marks 1 to 3 are the usual places; which apply depends on the format and year.

The formats, in order

Each row is one rule the decoder applies. Where two rows overlap in years, a number can match both, and the decoder shows both.

YearsFormatHow sureUsually found
1939 to 1965 Sequential numbers, 1939 to 1965
Three to five digits. Pencilled inside the body before the mid-1950s, then a paper label, then a stamp.
Likely (estimated) Pencilled inside the body (1939 to early 1950s), white label (1949 to 1957), orange oval label (1957 to 1965), stamp inside the body.
1966 to 1972 Month and year-digit code, 1966 to 1972
No hyphen, five or six digits. The first one or two digits are the month, the next digit is the last digit of the year (6 for 1966 up to 2 for 1972), the rest is the sequence.
Ambiguous (estimated) Stamped on the back of the headstock or inside the body.
1973 to 1981 Month-hyphen-year-digit, 1973 to 1981
Month, a hyphen, then the year digit and a three-digit sequence (for example 3-4127).
Likely Stamped on the back of the headstock.
1989 to 2002 Japan YYMM format, 1989 to 2002
Two-digit year, two-digit month, two more digits, a hyphen, then three digits (for example 951120-014).
Likely Headstock back.
2003 to null Factory prefix, year and month, 2003 onwards
Two letters for the factory, two digits for the year, two for the month, then four digits.
Likely Headstock back.

Traps

  • Sequential numbers, 1939 to 1965. Year bands are approximate and the edges blur by several months. A white rectangular label points to 1949 to 1957, an orange oval label to 1957 to 1965.
  • Month and year-digit code, 1966 to 1972. Sources disagree on the start date (early 1965 versus mid-1966), and the code collides with late sequential numbers. Some late-1960s to 1981 hollowbodies have plain sequential five-digit numbers starting with 1 or 2.
  • Month-hyphen-year-digit, 1973 to 1981. Enter the hyphen. Without it the number is read as a different scheme.
  • Japan YYMM format, 1989 to 2002. Japan-built Gretsch of the Terada era.
  • Factory prefix, year and month, 2003 onwards. Outside the vintage window but included so a modern instrument is not misread.

Dates that matter

  • 1883. Gretsch founded in Brooklyn. The company starts as a maker of drums and banjos.
  • 1957. Filter'Tron pickup introduced. Gretsch adds its humbucking pickup.
  • 1967. Baldwin acquires Gretsch. A change of ownership leads to production and numbering changes.

Features that help date it

  • Orange oval paper label (1957 to 1965). A bright orange oval label on the inside back.
  • White rectangular paper label (1949 to 1957). A plain white rectangular label on the inside back.

Filter all features by brand and year.
